Up the valley from Fall City

Carnation sits north of the interstate, up the Snoqualmie Valley on SR 203 from Fall City, at the confluence of the Tolt and Snoqualmie rivers. It was incorporated in 1912 as the town of Tolt. The Carnation Evaporated Milk Company, which ran a research farm among the valley’s dairies, lobbied for the new name in 1917 over local objections; the town went back to Tolt in 1928 and has been Carnation again since 1951. It counted 2,158 residents at the 2020 census.

When a burner will not catch

A Wolf burner that clicks and will not light deserves two minutes of looking before it deserves a visit. Wolf’s own list starts with the simple causes. A burner still wet from cleaning or a boil-over has to dry, and a hairdryer on its low setting speeds that up. The cap and ring must be centred on the burner head and sit flat. Foil lining the burner pan has to come out.

A burner that sparks without stopping is a different case. Wolf asks for the wiring and polarity of the outlet to be checked, which is work for us or an electrician rather than a homeowner test. The igniters are electric, so with no power there is no click at all. And where a home runs on propane and the range is new to it, Wolf’s first question is whether the range was built for that gas; the rating plate says which.

When the oven will not light

On a Wolf GR Series gas range, the oven burner should light within about 40 seconds, the electrode clicking until the control senses flame. Wolf gives one owner step: keep the convection fan off during preheat, because the fan can lift the flame away from the burner where the electrode cannot detect it. If the oven still will not light, Wolf’s instruction is to stop using it until it is repaired.
