Where a remodel sends the duct

When a kitchen near the lake is opened up to the view, the range may move with it: onto an island, or to a wall that faces no outdoors at all. The hood follows it, and its duct can end up travelling a long way to find an outside wall. Wolf’s ventilation guide says a hood performs best when its duct run stays within 50 feet, and that figure is an equivalent length, so every elbow, transition and cap adds to it. The same guide asks for no elbows back to back, ideally with around 15 inches of straight duct between them. A run that looks modest on a drawing can be long by that measure, which is why a hood that coped in the old layout can sound strained in the new one.

Warm, wet cooking air that meets a duct chilled overnight can condense inside it, and the water runs back down to the hood. Wolf notes that a cold-weather installation may need a second backdraft damper, set as close to the roof or wall cap as possible, to keep cold air from flowing back down the run. Fitting one belongs to whoever does your ductwork; our part is to show where the cold is getting in.

If the hood was set up to recirculate instead of venting outside, Wolf is plain that recirculating does not remove heat or moisture. In a damp house near the lake, that alone can explain a kitchen that stays steamy however long the fan runs.
