A neighbourhood that was fitted out at once

The Highlands is the city’s urban village above I-90 — more than four thousand homes, the first of them occupied in 1998, built to Built Green standards. In the bigger houses the range, the hood and often a wall oven were specified together at construction and set into panel-ready cabinetry, so the appliances have aged side by side.

That makes a Highlands call less about one part and more about a suite reaching the same age: a spark module on the range, a fan bearing in the hood, a door gasket on the oven.

Where the building gets involved

A tight envelope and a strong hood work against each other. Wolf’s ventilation guide notes that make-up air may be needed to replace what the blower removes; without it, a hood on high can struggle and the room can pull slightly negative. We run the hood with and without a window cracked before blaming the blower, and we follow the duct: Wolf calls for rigid metal only, as few elbows as possible, and says its hoods work best when the run stays under 50 equivalent feet.
