Old lots, new ranges

Squak Mountain has been building for a long time. The city traces its older development to the 1960s and 1970s and notes that newer houses keep arriving, so its kitchens cover every generation in between. A few larger subdivisions, Inneswood, Kelkari, Morgan’s Ridge and The Woods among them, have associations; plenty of streets have none. When one of the older houses takes a Wolf range, it usually goes into a room laid out around something narrower: the opening is widened, the gas stub-out moves, and the cabinets either side are cut back to suit.

What a remodel has to respect

Wolf’s dual fuel installation guide gives the numbers that decide whether the fit is right. Combustible wall cabinets beside the range start at least 18 inches above the counter. The bottom of a hood sits 30 to 36 inches above it. With no hood at all, nothing combustible may hang lower than 36 inches over the counter, or 44 with a charbroiler.

Scorched cabinet sides, a range that rocks because it was pushed back hard against a relocated gas line, an anti-tip bracket nobody re-engaged after the range was pulled out: each arrives as a service call and turns out to be a question of fit. We measure these before quoting a part.

When a storm takes the power

If the lights go out, Wolf’s own guidance is brief. The surface burners on its gas and dual fuel ranges may be lit by hand with a long lighter, as the use and care guide describes, but never the oven, griddle or charbroiler. On a dual fuel range the oven is electric and simply stops, and on a gas range Wolf recommends switching the oven off until power returns.
