A house this near the lake can hold a good deal of moisture through the winter, and Wolf’s troubleshooting counts moisture and excessive humidity among the things that upset a gas burner.

For a surface burner that keeps sparking, Wolf’s list begins with spillover and moisture. Water from a boil-over, or from wiping the top down, can linger around the igniter and keep it firing. Wolf’s advice is simply to let it dry, with a hairdryer on low to hurry things along, and to check that every cap and ring sits flat and centred over its burner head.

If the clicking outlasts a dry top and properly seated caps, or it starts up with every knob off, the cause sits further in. Wolf points to the wiring and polarity of the outlet the range is plugged into, and to the spark module, the switches and the electrodes. Those are for us to test on the visit, not for you to open up.

Apart from low-profile wall hoods and downdrafts, every Wolf hood comes with a backdraft damper connected to the transition, the point where the hood joins its duct. It should swing open when the blower starts and fall closed when it stops. Stuck open, it lets cold, damp outside air sink into the kitchen while the hood is off. Stuck closed, it leaves the blower roaring while very little air leaves the room. We check how that damper moves before blaming the motor.
