What each of those usually turns out to be
- Burner clicks and clicks but never lights
- Spark is present, so the igniter itself is usually fine. Nine times out of ten it is a wet or misaligned burner cap, a blocked port, or a spark electrode that has cracked and is arcing to the wrong place. If every burner clicks together when only one knob is turned, the spark module is the suspect.
- Induction zone shuts down a minute after the pan goes on
- Usually thermal protection tripping, which points at the cooling fan or a blocked air path under the glass rather than at the coil. It can also be a pan that is too small or not ferrous enough for that zone. Error codes in the display narrow it down fast.
- No simmer — the element is either off or flat out
- On a radiant cooktop that is the infinite switch or the control board losing its ability to cycle the element. On gas it is more often a valve that needs the low-flame screw set correctly, particularly after a conversion between natural gas and propane.

Radiant element ran flat out or not at all. The infinite switch had welded itself closed. Straightforward once he had tested it, though I waited eight days for the switch to land.

One zone kept shutting itself down a minute after the pan went on. The cooling fan underneath was choked with dust from the remodel. Cleaned, tested on the heaviest pan I own, no more dropouts.
