One Side of the Cooktop Is Dead

Short answer

When the zones on one side of a Wolf induction or electric cooktop stay cold while the rest heat, first rule out what is working as designed: a zone lending power to a boosted neighbour, a pan the zone will not accept, or two separate tops that only look like one. A group that still stays dead points to the electronics feeding it. Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, tests which.

Summit Cooking Appliance Service

One visit reads the appliance and the installation around it. The $89 call-out pays for that reading and is deducted once you sign off the repair. Visits run 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days; phones picked up 24/7.

Behaviour that looks like a fault

The pan on the left comes to the boil; the one on the right sits cold. Before anything is condemned, a few things Wolf builds in on purpose can make one side look dead. Boost on an induction zone takes power from its neighbour. A zone that sees no suitable pan flashes for 30 seconds and gives up. On a radiant top the outer rings of a dual or triple zone only come on once the inner zone is set and Zone 2, Zone 3 or Oval is touched.

One top, or two

Wolf allows cooktops and 15-inch modules to sit side by side in one long cutout, and in a designed Issaquah kitchen the pair can read as a single top. Each unit has its own circuit, so “one side dead” can be one appliance whose breaker is off.

When one side really is dead

If Boost is off, the pan is right and the top is a single unit, a group of zones that stays cold points inside: the power electronics, the wiring between them and the control. That is ours to test, and we read the model from the rating plate on the bottom of the cooktop before starting.

Before you book

  1. If a zone beside the dead side is on Boost, switch Boost off. Wolf's induction tops borrow power from the adjacent element for Boost, and that element's indicator shows the lower level.
  2. Set a pan that you know works on induction, centred, on a dead zone. A zone that finds no suitable pan flashes for about 30 seconds and then switches itself off.
  3. If the top is really two units side by side, each one has its own breaker; check that the breaker for the dead side is on.
  4. Stop there. Whatever sits behind the appliance's own panels, on its gas valves or live inside it is ours to test: call Summit Cooking Appliance Service on (425) 272-6613 and say what you found in the steps above.

Questions

Is it safe to cook on the side that still works?

If nothing else is wrong, generally yes: the breaker holds, nothing smells hot and the glass is whole. Wolf says not to use a cooktop whose glass-ceramic surface is broken or badly pitted. Tripping or a burning smell means switching off at the breaker. Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, can then test the top.
