Charbroiler Will Not Light

Short answer

A charbroiler that clicks and stays dark, or catches and dies, points to one of three things: parts refitted out of place after cleaning, a knob short of Hi, or an igniter or gas-supply fault underneath. What should happen, and what goes wrong

Wolf’s charbroiler cooks food straight on the grate over an infrared burner, with ceramic tiles beneath the grate. It lights like a surface burner: push the knob in, turn it to Hi, and the igniter clicks until the flame catches. Wolf then asks for ten minutes of preheat with the hood running.

Look first at what happened last. After a clean, the grate comes out for washing, and the frame and blank-off plate can go back slightly off. Wolf’s guide specifically warns against knocking the igniter while assembling, and Wolf lists a faulty igniter among the reasons a gas burner fails to light.

Where the kitchen comes into it

A charbroiler raises the bar for the space around the range: Wolf’s dual-fuel installation guide asks for more clear height above one when there is no hood. And since Wolf’s use and care guides warn against ventilation blowing down toward a gas range, a register or air curtain aimed at the top is worth ruling out whenever lighting fails only while it runs.

Before you book

Push the knob in and turn it all the way to Hi, then release it and make sure it springs back. On the all-gas range the charbroiler knob has only Off and Hi.

With everything cold, check the frame sits squarely on the range, the blank-off plate lies centred on the ceramic tiles and the grate is on top. Keep hands clear of the igniter and remove any foil.

If the charbroiler was washed or something boiled over beside it, give the area time to dry out completely before trying again.

Why does the charbroiler keep clicking?

The igniter clicks until the burner lights, so constant clicking means the burner has not caught. Wolf's first answer is to check that the knob sits fully at Hi. If it does and the clicking continues, the igniter or the gas reaching the burner is the next suspect, and both are service work.

Should I keep trying to light it?

No. If it clicks at Hi without catching, turn the knob off and leave it. If you smell gas at any point, relight nothing: get everyone out, then phone the gas utility or 911 once you are outdoors. Otherwise Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, can check the burner and igniter.
