Dual Fuel: Burners Work, Oven Is Dead

Short answer

When the gas burners on a Wolf dual-fuel range still light but the oven below them stays cold or dark, start with the 240-volt supply the oven relies on: the two-pole breaker and the conductors on the terminal block at the back of the range. One range, two kinds of power

You open the oven door and nothing happens: no heat, perhaps no light, perhaps a blank screen. Above it, the burners tick and catch as usual. On a Wolf dual-fuel range that split is a clue. The top burns gas and needs electricity to light it; the oven heats with electric elements, and the range’s circuit is sized around them.

A 240-volt circuit is two 120-volt lines fed through a two-pole breaker. Lose either line, at the breaker, inside the wall or at a slack screw on the terminal block, and a range can keep lighting its burners while its oven stays cold.

Where the installation comes in

Ask what changed. A range pulled out for new flooring in an Olde Town kitchen, or slid back after a cabinet run was rebuilt in the Highlands, may well have had its supply undone and remade at that block, as three-wire or four-wire to suit the house.

What the visit covers

With the breaker off we check every conductor on the block is tight and unmarked, then restore power and measure both lines. Elements and control are tested only once the supply reads right. A fault in the house wiring goes to an electrician.

Before you book

If only the clock has gone blank and the oven still heats when you choose a mode, that is the standby power setting Wolf's current guide describes under Settings, not a failure.

Find the range's breaker in the panel. If it has tripped, push it firmly to off and then on; if it looks untouched, switch it off for 20 seconds before switching it on again, the reset Wolf gives for a panel that has stopped responding.

Write down anything the oven screen shows, word for word, and whether the oven light comes on when you open the door.

Can I keep cooking on the burners while the oven is out?

The gas top works independently of the oven, so using it is reasonable unless something near the range smells hot or looks scorched. Then switch the range off at its breaker; Wolf allows the surface burners to be lit by hand with a long lighter without power, never the oven.
