Liner Vibrating Inside a Custom Enclosure

Short answer

A buzz or drumming from a custom wood or plaster hood usually comes from the Wolf liner inside it: fixings that have worked loose, a liner that does not sit fully within the enclosure, or blower vibration reaching the framing. Why a custom hood amplifies it

A custom hood is a box around a metal box. Wolf leaves the outer shape to the designer, in wood, plaster, tile or metal, as long as the liner sits wholly inside and the two line up underneath. What no guide can control is how much of the liner’s vibration that box picks up. Timber and plaster panels behave like a sounding board: a faint hum from a blower wheel or a loose screw, unnoticed in a stainless pro hood, becomes a drum inside a painted one.

Loose, touching or out of balance

Three things produce it. Fixings between liner and enclosure can work loose as the wood dries and moves. Something may touch that should not: the duct against a framing member, or a panel against the side of the liner. Or the blower itself has a tired bearing or a wheel carrying grease unevenly. The first two change when you press on the enclosure; the third follows the speed.

Who puts it right

We take the filters down, check the liner’s fixings, the blower mounting and the wheel, and read the tag. Trimming or shimming the enclosure is joinery for your carpenter, and we show them where it touches.

Before you book

Run the blower through its speeds and note where the buzz starts and stops. A noise that belongs to one speed is worth reporting exactly.

While it buzzes, rest a flat hand gently on the enclosure face near its bottom edge. If the sound changes, the enclosure and the liner are touching or loose.

Look along the underside where liner and enclosure meet for an uneven gap, a shifted trim strip, or one corner standing lower than the rest.

Does a buzzing liner mean the hood was installed wrongly?

Not necessarily. Fixings can loosen as new timber settles, and a blower wheel can wear or collect grease unevenly over time.
