Hood Mounted Too High to Capture
Short answer
Smoke rolling out past the edges of a Wolf hood that is running on high can be a mounting problem rather than a blower one. Wolf's ventilation guide gives each hood type a height band, measured from the countertop to the bottom of the hood, and warns that performance may be compromised above it. Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, measures height and width against that band.

One visit reads the appliance and the installation around it. The $89 call-out pays for that reading and is deducted once you sign off the repair. Visits run 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days; phones picked up 24/7.
Why a few inches change so much
Heat and smoke leave the pans as a plume that widens as it rises. A hood close to the cooking meets that plume while it is still narrow; the same hood set higher meets a broader, slower cloud, and whatever spills past its edge is lost to the room. Cross currents from a doorway or a busy island push the plume sideways as well. That is why Wolf treats height as a performance figure, and why its guide suggests a hood with more airflow capacity for islands and for hoods that must sit higher.
How a hood ends up there
In a remodel it is often a design choice: a hood raised to open the view across an island, or set level with the tops of the wall cabinets under a tall ceiling. For a tall ceiling, Wolf’s guide offers another answer: spare height above a pro hood can be taken up with a flue extension or a stainless duct cover, or the hood can be set anywhere inside its band.
What can change
Lowering the hood is work for the installer or contractor. A stronger blower can help an island hood that has to stay high, provided the duct can carry it. Our part is making sure the blower, damper and filters give everything they can, so the height question is judged on a hood that works.
Before you book
- With the hood off, measure from the countertop beside the cooktop up to the lowest edge of the hood and write the figure down.
- Measure the width of the hood and of the cooking surface. On an island, note how far the hood reaches past the cooktop on each side.
- On a hard sear, watch where the smoke escapes: over the front edge, around the sides, or drifting toward an open door or window.
- Stop there. Whatever sits behind the appliance's own panels, on its gas valves or live inside it is ours to test: call Summit Cooking Appliance Service on (425) 272-6613 and say what you found in the steps above.
Questions
Is a Wolf hood a couple of inches too high worth lowering?
Often yes, because capture improves as the hood comes closer to the pans, and Wolf's guide sets pro hoods at 30 to 36 inches. Lowering is carpentry and duct work for your installer. Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, can first confirm the blower, damper and filters are sound, so you are not moving a hood whose real fault lies elsewhere.
